5-Inch vs. 6-Inch vs. 7-Inch Gutters: Which Size Does Your Florida Home Need?

Gutter size is one of the most overlooked decisions in a gutter project, and in Central Florida it matters more than almost anywhere else. Our summer storms can deliver intense rainfall in a short time, and a gutter that’s too small simply can’t keep up. Here’s how to think about 5-inch, 6-inch, and 7-inch gutters for an Orlando-area home.

What the size actually measures

Residential K-style gutters are measured across the top opening. A larger opening means a deeper, wider trough that holds and moves more water. Moving from 5 inches to 6 inches increases capacity substantially, and 7-inch gutters handle even more. Downspout size matters too: a 3×4-inch downspout drains much faster than the 2×3-inch downspouts found on many older homes.

5-inch gutters

Five-inch gutters are common on builder-grade homes because they cost the least. They can work on small, low-pitched roof sections with modest runoff. On larger roofs, steep pitches, or below valleys, they often overflow during Florida downpours, which is why many homeowners upgrade them.

6-inch gutters

For most single-family homes in Orlando and the surrounding area, 6-inch seamless gutters are the best balance of capacity, appearance, and cost. They handle heavy summer storms far better than 5-inch gutters, resist overflow below most valleys, and pair well with 3×4-inch downspouts.

7-inch gutters

Seven-inch gutters are designed for large roof areas, steep pitches, and valleys that funnel a lot of water into one spot. They’re common on larger custom homes, two-story homes with big roof planes, and light commercial buildings. If you see water shooting over your gutters in a hard rain, 7-inch gutters with oversized downspouts are often the solution.

Signs your gutters are undersized

  • Water overshoots the gutter at roof valleys during heavy rain, even when the gutters are clean.
  • Gutters fill to the top and spill along their length during storms.
  • Downspouts gurgle or back up, or water sprays from downspout seams.
  • Soil erosion, staining, or puddling appears along the same stretch of the house after every storm.

Downspouts matter as much as gutters

A big gutter feeding a small downspout will still overflow. We size and place downspouts based on the roof area each one drains and add extra outlets where water collects. Routing them away from your foundation is just as important.
